Meet the Heritage Academy Teaching Staff
Diane Bass: Art Mrs. Bass teaches art at Heritage Academy and is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in Secondary Education. Diane was “Teacher of the Year” at Heritage Academy for the 2006-2007 school year and was honored by the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. Diane also teaches for the Hilton Head Art League and has had two one-person art shows and won a 1st Place award in the 2007 HHAL National Art Exhibition.
Lee Bracken: Math Mr. Bracken is entering his sixth year of teaching high school math. Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Bracken spent 18 years working in the catalog industry for EGI in a variety of management positions, including six years as President/CEO. Mr. Bracken played on the golf team at Illinois College where he graduated with a B.A. degree in Math and Business Administration. He has an MBA from Northern Illinois University and completed the Secondary Teacher Certification program in Mathematics at Central Connecticut State.
Melony Bradley: English/Psychology Mrs. Bradley earned a B.A. in Education/French from Waynesburg College and has taken graduate courses in English and Psychology from Loyola University and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Bradley is a certified teacher with extensive classroom experience in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and South Carolina. She is the recipient of the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club Master Teacher Award in 1989, 1993, 2002 and 2003. She has taught middle school and high school English at Heritage Academy since February 2000.
Liz Dimmling: Math Mrs. Dimmling holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Hofstra University and an M.B.A. from the Univ. of N. Florida. Prior to her work as a College Placement Counselor at The Bolles School, Liz was Assistant Head at Bartram School. Liz was awarded the Klingenstein Award from Columbia University and was the recipient of a Fulbright fellowship in '89-'90. This is her fourth year teaching high school mathematics at Heritage.
Edward Docalavich: Science Mr. Docalavich is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Binghamton University, with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Biology. He has been a science teacher, residential life aide with the Handicapped Children’s Association and has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Docalavich is a member of Psi New York Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and received the award for Teacher of the Year at Heritage Academy for the 2003-2004 school year. Mr. Docalavich is entering his seventh year as a science teacher at Heritage Academy.
Nohora Garzon: Spanish/ESL Ms. Garzon graduated in 1998 from the Industrial University of Santander in Columbia, South America. She completed additional training in English as a Second Language and taught ESL to Spanish-speaking middle and high school students in South America. She came to the U.S. in 1999 and taught ESL for professional adults. Ms. Garzon began teaching Spanish and ESL at Heritage Academy in 2008. She also owns Signo, which is a graphic design company.
Carmen Halpin: Spanish and ESL Mrs. Halpin spent a very happy childhood and youth in Madrid, Spain. She graduated from Alcala de Henares University with a B.A. in Education and English in 1991. In 1998, she received a master's degree in Linguistics through the International University in Madrid and Kobe University of Foreign Studies in Japan while working as an assistant professor, writing her thesis and studying Japanese. She moved to Hilton Head in 2000 and accepted a teaching position as an exchange teacher before accepting a position at Heritage Academy.
Tiffany-Dawn Hamilton: French Ms. Hamilton graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, a Master of Arts in International Business, as well as certification in Global Management. She also holds a minor in Mass Communications, certification in Professional Development and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and is a Corporate Etiquette and International Protocol Consultant, Certified by the Protocol School of Washington. In addition to being a private consultant, she is also a columnist, the Corporate Etiquette and Cotillion Programs Director for Haile Plantation Golf and Country Club, and the Co-Director of Cotillion Programs for the South Carolina Yacht Club. She began her teaching career at Heritage Academy in 2008-2009.
Sarah A. Hobson: Social Studies and English Ms. Hobson (B.A., University of North Carolina, Greensboro/M.Ed., Boston University) is a certified teacher. She has taught at Florida State University, and in public and private schools in New England and the South. Ms. Hobson is a published author in the field of adult literacy and has also written professional training manuals. She believes that each student has a truly unique gift to offer the world.
Lynne Kratochvil: Middle School Mrs. Kratochvil has over 30 years teaching and administrative experience in the public school systems of Florida and Georgia. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Mrs. Kratochvil attended the University of South Florida and earned her master’s degree in Educational Leadership. She has taught kindergarten through high school in math, English, social studies and foreign language. Mrs. Kratochvil also developed a program for at-risk high school students in Effingham County, Georgia. She joined the Heritage Academy faculty for the 2008-2009 school year.
Lorilee Quilhot Maurer: Choral Director Mrs. Maurer has been the director of Choral Activities since its inception in 2003. Under her direction, the choir has been awarded numerous gold and silver medals at the annual SCISA State Music Festival, with her solo voice students receiving numerous gold and silver medals each year. She is the Director of The Hilton Head Choral Society Youth Choir; music teacher at Christ Lutheran Preschool; performs regularly at The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina (most recently in CATS, Beauty and the Beast, and West Side Story); and is involved with various choirs at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She received her undergraduate choral education from Florida State University.
Tracy Sklarin: Math Mrs. Sklarin has been a teacher of mathematics for eleven years. She is a graduate of Georgia State University with a B.S. in Mathematics Education and started her career at Columbia High School in DeKalb County, Georgia. After a few years she followed her other passion, swimming, and became a year round swim coach at Dynamo Swim Center. She later returned to teaching at St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Atlanta, Georgia, where she taught fifth grade math before beginning at Heritage Academy in 2007.
Kathy Seyalioglu: Science The 2008-2009 school year marks Mrs. Seyalioglu's sixth year at Heritage. Kathy earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Drew University and her M.F.A. from Savannah College of Art and Design. Prior to moving to Hilton Head, Kathy and her family lived thirteen years in Istanbul, Turkey, where Kathy worked as a professional equestrian trainer at a large riding club.
Trelle Stephens: English Mrs. Stephens (B.A. UNC-Chapel Hill with a major in English Education) has 25 years of teaching experience in the North Carolina public school and community college systems and at Heritage Academy. She is a certified Zenger-Miller management trainer, has trained employees for the Pinehurst Companies on Daufuskie, was Assistant Vice-President of Corporate Affairs for a major national trade association and still facilitates strategic long-range planning sessions for associations.
Ted Zawacki: Social Studies Mr. Zawacki begins his 6th year as a teacher of Government/Economics, U.S. History and World History at Heritage Academy. He graduated from Wake Forest University with a B.A. in History and from Syracuse University with a M.S. in Physical Education. He was the Heritage Academy Teacher of the Year in 2004-2005 and the SCISA Teacher of the Year in 2006-2007.
Jenny Zmarzly: Middle School Jenny Zmarzly holds a B.S. Ed. from Ohio University and a Masters in Curriculum Instruction and Design from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She worked with the Elementary Science Integration Project (ESIP), a teacher research project for curriculum integration. She has presented at National Science Teacher Conventions and local conventions and has led teacher in-service workshops. Jenny was a classroom teacher for many years with Baltimore City Public Schools. She was also an academic tutor, adjunct instructor, and teacher supervisor with Carroll County Community College and UMBC. |
