ESL (English as Second Language)

Heritage Academy believes that diversity within the school environment offers students the opportunity to learn values and attitudes that only a true international community can provide. Therefore, Heritage Academy seeks to enroll students from foreign countries. Attracting and maintaining an international student body necessitates a commitment to provide academic programs and social support to ensure the success of all students.

The key to the program is instruction tailored to a student's stage of language acquisition at time of enrollment; therefore, correct placement is crucial. Each identified student is given both a verbal and written diagnostic and placement inventory that provides for six placement points into materials and instruction. The students are monitored daily for progress and at significant time periods, they are retested to assess mastery of skills as they move through predictable stages of language development.

Content material, meaningful to students of all cultures, is at the center for developing English vocabulary, decoding strategies, text structures, reading comprehension, grammar, and writing abilities.
